Hip Replacement Surgery - Your way back to the hipster life

What Is Hip Replacement Surgery?
Hip replacement surgery is an advance prosthetic implant technique in orthopedics. It is also known as arthroplasty which literally means re-forming of joints. It is useful surgical procedure for any conditions which results in wearing down of hip joints, inflammatory disease of the bones, avascular necrosis, tumours and injury. This surgery requires only 1-4 days of hospitalization post- operatively. The risks involved in this surgery are comparatively low.  It removes the diseased and damaged bones and replaces it with synthetic ones also known as prosthetic implants. The prosthetic consists of three parts first one is the acetabular cup, second is the femoral component and third one is the articular interface. The goal of this surgery is to help the hip work better, improve the flexibility and mobility of the joint and also to give relief in pain.
Types of Hip Replacement Surgery:-
The hip replacement surgery can be of two types.
  • Total hip replacement
The total hip replacement surgery is a major surgical procedure. It involves the replacement of all the 4 parts namely the socket, liner, ball ( Head of femur) and stem. The cup is made up of metals that fit into the natural hip socket. The liner is made up of polyethylene ( a medical grade plastic). The head implant form the ball of the hip joint and the stem is made up of metal. The components of the artificial implants are fixed with cements on the bone. It cement is not used then the surfaces of the implants are roughened or specially treated to enable bone to grow on them.  The implants can be polyethylene, metal or ceramic. These can be combined in different ways and used for the procedure. The four most common type of combinations are metal-on plastic, ceramic-on plastic, ceramic-on ceramic and lastly metal-on metal.
  • Minimal invasive hip replacement
This approach seeks to reduce the tissue damage through a smaller incision. Unlike in the traditional total hip replacement surgery in this procedure the amount of time taken for recovery is much shorter as well as the complications is minimal. The implants used are the same as in the traditional one.  In order to put the implants properly in the socket and the femur, specially designed instruments are used.
Causes-
·        Foreign and loose bodies in the joints
These foreign or loose bodies in the joint are a result of trauma from sports, osteoarthritis, synovium chromatosis(non-cancerous tumour of the joint)  or charcot’s disease(progressive degeneration of the weight bearing joint).
·        Lesions of bone or cartilages
Lesions occur in the bone or cartilages by tear or fracture. The cartilages covering the bones can be crushed or damaged due to osteochondritis dissecans(bone under the cartilage dies due to cessation of blood flow to the joint).
·        Synovial disorder
Synovial disorders are related to the diseases of the synovial cavity. Synovial cavity is filled with synovial fluid which helps to keep the joints lubricated and avoids friction between the bones. In various diseases conditions like osteoarthritis, synovitis , arthritis etc the synovial fluid decreases in the joint leading to lessening of the joint space. This damages the cartilage that covers the bony surface thus resulting in friction between the bones.

·        Degenerative Joint Diseases
Diseases like Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, etc are known as degenerative joint diseases. Of the numerous degenerative joint diseases osteoarthritis is the most common in which hip replacement surgery is applied. Due to continuous wear and tear of the weight bearing joint erosion of cartilages and bony spurs formation occurs. The erosion of the cartilage results from the aging process and the damaged cartilage stimulates the formation of new bone growth known as bony spur or osteophytes.
·        Injuries or fractures
Hip replacement surgery can be opted in cases where there has been severe damage to the hip joints following a major accident. Compound fractures make healing difficult. The bones don’t join properly and the alignments in such injuries are not symmetrical.
·        Bone Tumours
Tumours of the hip bone can result in pressure on the blood flow to the joint and also on the cartilages. The tumours of the hip joints could be either benign like exostosis, fibrous dysplasia, bone cyst etc or malignant like Ewing’s sarcoma, osteosarcoma etc. This results in damage to the bones.

Sign and symptoms:-
·        Pain while moving or working for a long time
·        Stiffness from rest or getting up from a posture
·        Swelling in the joints
·        Loss of flexibility with less range of mobility
·        Soreness with aching pain
·        Deformity of the joints

Benefit of the treatments:-.
·        It removes the damaged and diseased bones.
·        Patient can start resume routine activities as the recovery progresses.
·        Post operatively it restores the movement and activity.
·        It is useful in eliminating pain.

Shape your body by removing excess fat from specific areas like arms, neck, abdomen, buttocks, hips and thighs. India is the best destination. Indian plastic surgeons perform more than one lakh liposuction surgeries a year. Liposuction is a procedure in which the stubborn fatty deposits that do not reduce with diet and exercise are removed. It is also known as lipoplasty or body contouring procedure. It is not a weight loss method. In this excess fat is removed from specific areas like arms, neck, abdomen, buttocks, hips, and thighs. This procedure also gives shape to these areas. When you gain weight the fat cells increase in size. In liposuction the number of fat cells in the area is reduced.
